The Cormorant, Porth Eirias

The Little Orme has one of the largest Cormorant colonies in the UK. These amazing birds are a frequent sighting on the Bay of Colwyn coastline. Their feathers are not waterproof so they can often be seen drying off their impressive wings.

The idea for this installation came from a Coleg Llandrillo student concept. The plastic in the belly of the sculpture highlights the issue of plastic on wildlife. Sadly 100,000 marine mammals and turtles and 1 million sea birds are killed by marine plastic pollution annually. (UK Government, 2018)

Small World Theatre artists’ description

Created with a frame of welded steel rod, with wings from old shelving panels. The feet are an unwanted pair of swim flippers salvaged from CREST. Feathers are made from old bicycle tyres and tractor inner tube. Wing peaks and chest from fly tipped quadbike mud guards. The tail and lower belly were made from an old plastic garden chair and the beak is a discarded yellow flexi plastic tub. Black land drainage pipe made a perfect neck and single use plastic bottles can be seen in the belly.
